Effective Team Building
Effective Team Building
14 September 2005

In building effective Teams, it is important to first distinguish that Teams differ from the 'working group'.  In Team environments, members agree that a win for the team supercedes a win for the individual. Teams also differ as the completion of a particular project or plan is with a defined and specific result. The development of healthy interdependent relationships can affect Team success by 85%.

Processes essential to Team building:

1. Defining the Goal
Defining the goal, the big picture and the desired outcome is the first stage in the process. It is important to ensure team members understands the purpose of why the team was created, and the positive attributes of each individual that led to their selection.

2. Mutual Accountability
A team is effective when members understand that they are accountable to each other, and not to the owner.

3. Strong Leadership
It is with strong leadership skills that Team coordination and open communication exists. The leader is careful to define only the end goal, and not the process in which it is achieved. Maintaining harmony and high morale is with primary intent.

4. Group Guideline
Each Team member must have a desire to be apart of the team. Together the Team decides and delegates individual roles and responsibilities and the best course of action to be taken. All governing rules, regulations and conflict resolutions strategies are decided via group consensus.

There are many potentially destructive behaviors to Team building. Member's may lose interest or refuse to accept accountability and project deadlines will be missed.

To prevent small issues escalating, regular scheduled meetings should be utilized as a tactical response session. In addition to information sharing, meetings should focus on clarifying concerns, forming necessary decisions and for the receiving of feedback.

Each member must have their own unique competence and skills to offer. Teams where members are individual engaged with profound responsibility and control, are more likely to contribute their significant worth.  Effective Teams increase the Company's control towards obtaining the desired goal.

The provision of enough resources, money and time to support Team building processes are the responsibility of the Company. Positive collaboration should be recognized and rewarded to encourage effective Team building.END ◘
